Mentorship

Mentoring is a confidential two way developmental conversation with a colleague, which will enable you to discuss the issues that are of importance to you in general medical practice. You do not need to have a specific 'problem' to address, but mentoring will help you to explore your own thoughts and feelings about yourself and your medical practice and to develop new perspectives and set yourself goals.

Over the years mentoring has been found to be really useful particularly in supporting professionals in the times of transition. These may be:

· Joining a new partnership
· Developing a new role in the partnership
· Being involved in more specialist work
· Running professional life as a non-principal
· Taking on management roles
· Mid-career (where do I go from here?)
· Coming up to retirement

Mentoring is not aimed at 'failing' doctors but can be helpful in sorting out specific issues before they become a problem.

· Partnership issues such as communication and integration
· Getting life-work balance
· New horizons in mid-career

The mentors bring to the mentoring relationship their own experiences and talents. They have been trained in mentoring skills and receive on-going training by Cygnus Mentoring. They are there to develop a trusting relationship which will concentrate on your needs in a confidential setting.

Each mentoring session will last about 1-1 ½ hours. The session is confidential. This time is yours to explore whatever aspect of your professional and personal life you wish and to develop some new ways of managing.

Funding has been obtained from the PCT via the LMC. Both organisations understand the value of mentoring and are fully supportive of the service that is being offered. The LMC is responsible for the day-to-day management of the project. Therefore if you would like to meet a mentor kindly telephone Suzy or Sue at the LMC office on 01708 465046 for the profile of the mentors to help you to choose.
